“Cellular Portrait” is an innovative and revolutionary bioartistic concept developed by Dulbecco that consists in the extraction of cellular elements from an individual and its implementation in the composition of biologically personalized artworks. It is inspired by the new treatment approaches for chronic diseases such as cancer, which involve genomic and physiological analyzes of the patient to provide a personalized therapy. By using visual elements that are genetically codified by the organism, a variable of intimacy is introduced into the creative process, which highlights the animal condition of the being represented, not only aesthetically but conceptually by capturing its inner essence.

The BioArtist introduces this concept through his “Cellular Self-Portrait” made with his own blood cells. These microscopic elements were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy to generate basal photomicrographs, using cutting-edge equipment from the Research Center in Microscopic Structures of the University of Costa Rica. Basal photomicrographs were used as the starting point for the composition of the derived visual BioArt through digital design. The work represents the artist’s multiple personalities and how they can unconsciously sabotage the conscious being. What in Carl Jung’s theory is known as “the shadow”. The work reveals some knowledge to its author as an epiphany: “the chaos of such sabotage is mitigated by the maturity that comes with experience and the unification of all these facets into a more enlightened being”. Finally, specific music was produced with dramatic purposes to expose said narrative (audiovisual BioArt).
