“Symbioses” is a living and continuously growing collection of digital audiovisual compositions created in collaboration with animal cells and viruses. The title alludes not only to the creative encounters between the author and the microscopic entities with which he works, but also to the broader epistemological and metaphorical symbioses that emerge between art and science, between the microscopic and macroscopic worlds, and between human experience and the biological processes with which it is entangled. The works are representations and reveries of macroscopic reality expressed through the microscopic world, addressing diverse themes that inspire aesthetic exploration and inquiry channeled through artistic expression. Within these biopoetic explorations, the author transforms scientific observations into artworks that invite reflection on a variety of subjects, including the relationships between different scales of existence, the hidden biological processes that shape our shared reality with other living beings, and contemporary social issues, among others.

Description: Fluorescence microscopy of human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
Author’s interpretation: Cellular allegory of a kaleidoscope. Beware of optical illusions! Reality is not a fact; it is a matter of perception…

Description: Epifluorescence microscopy of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (cyan) infected with Dengue Virus (yellow). Cell nuclei are shown in magenta.
Author’s interpretation: This work is a microscopic allegory of the “portal of life” that during mammalian gestation connects the fetus with the mother through the umbilical cord.

Description: Infection kinetics of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) on monkey kidney cells recorded by time-lapse live-cell fluorescence imaging over 120 hours.
Author’s interpretation: Audiovisual BioArt based on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Made with love and respect for all the victims and the japanese people.

Description: Infection kinetics of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 in monkey kidney epithelial cells recorded by time-lapse live-cell fluorescence imaging over 96 hours.
Author’s interpretation: The first life forms on earth were developed in the oceans and the sustainability of life in the continents still depends on it. Polluting our cradle attempts against the evolution itself and will not be forgiven by the planet…

Description: Fluorescence microscopy of human kidney fibroblasts stained with fluorescent probes labeling the nucleus and endoplasmic reticulum.
Author’s interpretation: Microscopic allegory of our beginning as species. The work depicts a proto-primate from the genus Purgatorius hidden in the shadows of our cells, deep into our genetic code.
